Volkswagen has just announced that production of the ID.4 in North America is coming to an end—for now. However, the German automaker hasn’t said its final word regarding its compact electric SUV, as the model remains part of the brand’s future.
At this point, little is known about the model’s future, but all signs suggest it could be renamed the ID. Tiguan, quite simply, as reported by Automotive News Europe a few weeks ago.
Making Room
Electric vehicles have been losing momentum in recent months, which is somewhat ironic given the surge in gasoline prices. As a result, Volkswagen has decided to halt production of the model at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant. The production line will be retooled to accommodate more popular models at the moment, such as the Atlas.
A Transition Period
If you were planning to purchase a Volkswagen ID.4, there’s no need to panic. The brand assures that there will be sufficient inventory available to meet demand even after production officially ends in the coming days.
This situation should be seen as a pause while the brand prepares for the arrival of a new generation. This is, after all, a fairly common occurrence in the automotive industry. Current inventory levels should ensure the model remains available until the next generation arrives.
We can therefore expect the next generation to move closer to the Tiguan in terms of design, which, in my opinion, is a good thing. We should learn more in the coming months.
